In parallel to this research activity, Benoit Bourel creates in 2006 and animates the Institute of Sustainable and Responsible Development, a device for the development of transversal projects within the Université Catholique de Lille, in synergy with local stakeholders. Since 2014, he has been Vice-Rector in charge of University Societal Responsibility (RSU).

He is a member of the Smart & Sustainable Cities research unit, holder of the Explorers of Transition Chair, which studies the social aspects of the energy and societal transition: sociotechnical approaches, energy performance management, mobility management, in a demonstrator campus that invites the development of research programs and the mobilization of site users.

He is particularly involved in Live TREE, the energy and societal transition program of the Université Catholique de Lille, in the implementation of the experimental socio-technical building Rizomm and coordinates the LIFE MaPerEn project funded by the European Commission on energy performance management.
