Laura Carraresi helped write the article “Actors’ strategic goals in emerging technological innovation systems: evidence from the biorefinery sector in Germany“.

This article explores the strategic objectives that underpin stakeholder involvement in emerging Technological Innovation Systems (TIS) for sustainable technologies and how they contribute to the development of TIS functions.

Based on six expert interviews with companies in the biorefinery sector in Germany, we observe four different strategic objectives that motivate the involvement of companies-actors:

  1. the exploitation of new markets and new businesses;
  2. learning about the potential of new markets and new businesses;
  3. the development of new technologies;
  4. and the creation of new business applications.

We also distinguish three types of business roles:

  1. an established “leader” type company making a strong contribution to TIS functions;
  2. an established “learning” type company with a lower contribution;
  3. and an SME or a “fill the gap” type start-up producing additional knowledge or connecting other TIS players.
